Age UK Gateshead is an independent local charity, working in the local community since 1972 to help older people. They have 31 dedicated staff and over 90 volunteers, helping deliver services and activities for older people in Gateshead.
Since early 2021, the Ballinger Charitable Trust has been providing grants towards the running costs of their dementia support work.
Dementia Care Centre
The dementia centre in Felling, offers a Monday to Saturday service with specially trained, friendly staff – designed to give both clients and carers a break.
A specialised service is offered for individuals with a diagnosis of dementia, providing a safe environment to make new friends and the opportunity to join in many activities. The centre is fully equipped with its own in-house bar, pool table, football table, cinema screen, popcorn machine, nail salon and hairdressers.
The centre is suitable for low to medium levels of dementia, and offers:
- Delicious and nutritious hot meals.
- Places from 1 day per week to all 6 days
- The option of transport to and from the centre on wheelchair-friendly minibuses
- A variety of stimulating activities such as live music events, reminiscence tasks, crafts, singing, snooker, dancing and more.
Staff are trained to delivery cognitively stimulating activities, proven to be beneficial for those diagnoses with dementia.
Dementia Links
Dementia links is a community-based service covering the entire borough of Gateshead, working together with local GP surgeries to support individual’s with a current or new dementia diagnosis.
The team can assist in helping to understand dementia and provide support with information, advice and guidance – from finance to leisure.
Staff are also able to provide an easy access route to services such as:
